Why Data privacy?
Why Data protection?
The question is a rich one.
It is one I think would be better answered by explaining what data and data protection is, in itself.
I like to think that it is quite simple to get to it; I do think its explanation will cut across our daily activities and will therefore make it so relatable.
I am sure that as an internet subscriber and social media user, you are often confronted with the familiar request of your personal data in order to access or use some platforms.
Personal data? you may ask, what does it even mean?
It means your name, your address, your contact information and other sensitive information about you.
In this year and age, it is of course unavoidable to share these things.
However, it introduces the risk of having personal, sensitive information being potentially shared or sold to high level security agents.
The value of data in today’s world cannot be overemphasized.
Data is often said to be the most valuable asset, no longer, oil.
In definition, it is described as individual units of information, which may be measured, collected, stored and analyzed.
In this internet age, a lot of data is being generated.
Companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, routinely require their subscribers to provide data to facilitate access.
Data is abundant.
Protecting data from compromise and corruption is therefore needful.
That is why Data privacy and Data protection is important.
Data protection is the process of safeguarding and protecting data/important information from compromise and loss.
Data privacy helps ensure that sensitive data is only accessible to approved parties. It prevents malicious use of data and ensures that organizations meet regulatory requirements.
So, Data privacy therefore describes who has access to data, while Data Protection provides the tools, regulations and policies that restrict/control access to the data.
If there are no laws to enforce these, the value of these rights will be lost.
In order to uphold these rights, nations of the world have put in place regulations and laws to guide the use and access to personal data.
Our dear, country , Nigeria is not left out.
In our subsequent letters, we will discuss these regulations wholly.
Till we see next time, have a great day!
